What to do After Getting a Law Degree?

The feeling of being a law graduate is awesome. The real life starts when you go out of your college and start earning money.  Many people think that after getting a law degree a person usually does practice in courts. But this is not the only career option which is available for law students. There are other options including judicial services, jobs in law firms, PSUs, teaching, etc. In this blog post, I shall throw some light on many career options available to law students after they graduate. There are many options available for a law student but one has to select wisely. 

Opportunities After Getting a Law Degree:


Practice in Courts of Law:

The most popular career option after graduation in law is practice. It is an exciting career in which we will have to represent our client and his interest. For young lawyers it is essential that they should have a social circle. People should know them. Those who have a legal background can prosper in this field but they cannot escape from struggle and hardwork. For those students who do not have a legal background, they may have to wait for some time to get success. This is true. If one wants to go in practice and survive in that field, he has to have good communication skills as well as argumentative skills in addition to the basic knowledge of law. For those who have a legal background they can initially practice under their knowns or relatives. 

What for those who do not have a legal background. They have to work under an advocate for sometime. It cannot be said that people do not get success in this field. One may become a successful advocate after hard work. This field is lucrative. If you are passionate of being a lawyer and your parents can support you in your initial years after you graduate, you may find some work under an advocate and after sometime when you may have acquired some experience, you may be able to practice on your own.

Jobs in law firms:

Another good opportunity for law students is to find jobs in law firms. This is specially for those who belong to reputed colleges. Many law firms hire graduates who are from National Law Universities or from some well known universities. So, if you wish to work in a law firm then it will be good if you are a student from a renowned institution. There are many renowned private colleges. One may take admission in those colleges. Some law firms also hire students who do not belong to NLUs. It is very much essential to choose a good law college. If your target is to find a job in a law firm, you should have secured good marks in CLAT exam or other equivalent entrance examination.

If you have participated in moot court competitions, presented research papers at international conferences, published research papers in good journals and have done internships during your graduation, these will appear as achievements in your CV. A strong CV is necessary in order to get a beautiful job.

Judicial services:

It is the most respectful job in the nation. Who does not want to become a judge? But how difficult is it to become a judge? If one wants to become a judge, he must clear the judicial services exam with good marks. In such a case, college does not matter. No one asks you about your college. You have to prepare for this examination. There are three stages of judicial service examination, i.e., preliminary, mains and interview.

There are two ways to prepare for the judicial services exam. Coaching and self study. It depends upon you whether you want to take coaching or prepare on your own. In the latter case, you need to prepare an expedient strategy and must have time management. Luck is another thing which matters a lot. If you want to go in this field, focus on enhancing your knowledge and practice answer writing. You should have good knowledge of general studies. It is important to be aware of contemporary legal issues. Daily read news paper.

Teaching:

Nothing can be better than educating the students and making them law abiding citizens. The job of a teacher is also a reputed job. After your graduation, you may pursue an LLM course and after obtaining a master's degree you can qualify UGC NET exam. During your graduation or masters, you should have a number of publications in well reputed journals. This is beneficial if you want to make a career in teaching. You may also pursue a PhD program. So, if you are interested in further studies then you may opt for a PhD program. Remember, a well-versed teacher will show the right path to the students.

Other Opportunities:

If you don't find success in the above mentioned fields, don't worry. There are many opportunities available for you. You may apply for government jobs at graduation level. You may prepare for other competitive exams. Never miss an opportunity. Try searching for jobs and do not give up.

Conclusion:

Whatever you want to become in your life totally depends upon you. You are the only one who is responsible for you and you know what is best for you. Do participate in moot court competitions, paper presentation at international conferences, publish research papers, do internships, and more importantly explore the area of your interest. Make a time table for your studies and study wholeheartedly. But do not sink in the studies. Don't be a book worm. It is always better and advisable to participate in extra-curricular activities and sports along with the studies. If you want to make a good career in law, you have to be hardworking.
